Captain Robert Holt McGill died on Sunday, August 28 at St. Bernard's Hospital in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He was born on February 6, 1941, in Memphis, Tennessee. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Leighton and Lucy McGill of Marked Tree, Arkansas; and his sisters, Betty Lu McGill Pope of Memphis, Tennessee, and Mary Taylor Colby of Mayfield, Kentucky; and a nephew, Taylor Colby of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Robert was a 1959 graduate of Marked Tree High School. A member of Pi Kappa Alpha, he graduated from the University of Arkansas. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force.
While in the air force, Robert was stationed at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines during the Vietnam War. He later served as a launch officer at missile silo installations in Great Falls, Montana; Tucson, Arizona; and Izmir, Turkey. After completing his career in the air force, Captain McGill retired and returned to Marked Tree where he was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church. He served as Secretary of the church for many years.
A devoted fan of Razorback athletics, Robert was a lifetime student of history and politics. He also was a lifelong collector of coins and stamps.
The kindness and care of the staff of Caring Hearts and Three Rivers Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, as well as the doctors and nurses at St. Bernard's SICU and its dialysis center, was much appreciated by Robert and his family.
Robert leaves behind loving nieces and nephews. Uncle Robert will be remembered and missed by Cathy and Mike Fay of Germantown, Tennessee; Clark and Susan Colwell of Memphis, Tennessee; Beth and Stephen Deutschbauer of Wenonah, New Jersey; Stephen Colby and Kay Cochran of St. Louis Missouri; Caroline and Greg Kerr of Athens, Georgia; and Dana Colby of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Funeral Service will be held Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 2:00 pm at The First United Methodist Church in Marked Tree, Arkansas.
The family will receive friends from 1:00pm until service time.
Interment will follow at Marked Tree Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions to the First United Methodist Church in Marked Tree, Arkansas.
